Buccal cells are the loose skins cells (epithelial cells) that are found inside the mouth against the inner cheek. Buccal cells contain an abundance of DNA which can be used for genetic testing.
Buccal cells are collected by gently rubbing a special swab called a buccal swab inside the mouth against the cheek for a few seconds. Buccal swab sample collection is fast, simple and painless and can be used on patients at any age, including newborns.
